Marketplace risk signals

How to reduce scam risk when buying used online

No automated checker can guarantee that a listing or seller is genuine. You can still reduce risk by checking whether the product identity, price, photos, explanation, seller communication and payment flow make sense together instead of relying on one isolated signal.

An unusually low price should have a plausible explanation

A low price can be legitimate, but it should be compared with the correct model and condition. If the listing is far below genuinely comparable items and there is no condition issue, missing component or other explanation, investigate further before paying.

Avoid the opposite mistake as well: a listing is not suspiciously cheap merely because it was compared with a more expensive Pro model, larger storage option or full bundle. Correct identity is essential before price becomes a useful risk signal.

Look for conflicting or recycled information

The title, photos, model fields and description should describe the same item. Different model names, photos of several different units, technical specifications that do not fit the product, or a mismatch between the pictured and advertised variant are reasons to ask for clarification.

If an important point cannot be verified from the listing, ask for a fresh photo or a specific screen that demonstrates it. That can be more informative than relying on generic seller assurances.

Communication and payment method are part of the risk picture

Be cautious if you are pushed to pay immediately, use a payment method you do not understand, or move the whole transaction outside the marketplace without a credible reason. Traceability and available buyer protection matter if the item never arrives or materially differs from the listing.

Use several signals, not one red flag

A short seller reply, poor grammar or one bad photo is not proof of fraud. A stronger assessment looks at the entire transaction: product identity, price, documentation, communication, account history where available, and how delivery and payment are supposed to work.

Kjøpsvakten is decision support. It can highlight inconsistencies and questions worth investigating, but it does not replace your own verification or the safety tools provided by the marketplace.
